23 Essentials to Create Your Own Self Care Kit
You’re here because you want to take better care of yourself, right? But maybe the techniques you’ve tried and heard everybody raving about have not done a single thing for you.
And that’s why my goal today is to show you how to create your own self care kit.
A self care kit is an assortment of items tailored to your specific needs and wants that you keep in one place that makes you feel cared for, relaxed, and at peace.
How to Make a Self Care Kit
Now let’s dive into how to make a self care kit.
Figure Out Where to Store Your Self Care Items
The first step in making a self care kit is finding out what kind of storage you’ll be using to keep all of your items together. Here’s what to look for in choosing your storage:
- Size – You’ll need something big enough to hold all of your items.
- Durability – It needs to be sturdy. You don’t want your self-care items scattered all over the place.
- Appearance – Yep, you guessed it! It should be cute. So cute that you want to keep it filled with your favorite self care products.
I recommend a large woven basket or an oversized backpack.
Decide on What Items You Want in Your Self Care Kit
After you know where you’ll be storing your items, it’s time to figure out what items to include. I’m going to cover the self care kit essentials in a moment.
But first, let’s discuss some ways to use your kit.
Ways to Use Your Self Care Kit
In Your Self Care Routine
Incorporate your self care kit as a part of your regular self care routine. Whenever you decide to set some time aside for self care, you’ll have an already-made kit that you can grab to bring all of your self care practices together in one place.
For that Time of the Month
Use your kit to provide relief during menstruation. We all know how rough that time of the month can be.
And guess what? If you remember to include all the self care products that make you feel great, you won’t have to go searching for things that provide relief (like a heating pad!)
On A Bad Day
Listen we all have days where we feel crummy. Maybe we’re burnt out from work, school, or just the everyday happenings of life. So pulling out your self care kit in these difficult times can help to reduce your stress level.
So now that we’ve covered a few instances in which you would use your self care kit, now it’s time to go over the type of things you would include.
Self Care Kit Essentials: Things to Include
Everyone’s self care kit is going to contain different items based on personal interests and lifestyle. But there are some basic things to include like items for a positive mindset, knowledge, your favorite indulgences, your favorite body care items, and items for your spiritual care.
I’ve broken this out into four categories: Mind, Spiritual, Emotional, and Physical
Keep on reading to get some ideas of things you can include in your self care kit.
Items for Your Mind
Taking care of your mind is often a part of self care that people tend to forget. So when it comes to including items for your mind, focus on things that keep you positive as well as things that will strengthen your mind.
Items for a Positive Mindset
1. A Journal
Journals are one of the best things you can keep in your kit. Use it to write down your thoughts, make plans, or answer some self-discovery journal prompts.
You could even use it as a manifestation journal to create your desired life.
2. Positive Affirmation Flash Cards
Affirmation flashcards serve as positive reminders when we start getting into those negative mindsets. You can buy already-made flashcards, but why not just write down your own positive affirmations and then add them to your self care kit.
Need help with your own affirmations? Here’s an example of mine:
I am allowed to speak up about things that make me feel uncomfortable.
3. An Inspirational Book
Include your favorite book. One that incites emotions and makes you instantly feel uplifted. However, it doesn’t have to be a self-help book. It can be any book that makes you feel good and whole.
Items to Strengthen Your Mind
4. Word Searches
Add a word search book to your self care kit. I know I’m not the only one that loves word searches. I could literally do them for hours.
Make the word search even more challenging by timing yourself.
5. Sudoku
Do you like numbers? Then Sudoku is for you. It’s a challenging puzzle that requires you to get the numbers 1-9 to only appear once in a line and once inside a 3×3 square.
6. Puzzles
Putting together a puzzle is a great way to strengthen your mind. It reinforces the concept of how small things fit together to make something whole.
Items for Your Spiritual Wellbeing
When it comes to including things to care for yourself spiritually, you should include the things that truly make you feel whole, grounded, and at peace.
7. Yoga Mat
Yoga mats are great for doing your favorite yoga stretches. It can also double as a place to meditate. If you’re looking for some ideas to add to your mediation playlist, check out Michael Sealey on YouTube.
8. Gratitude Journal
Remember to give thanks and show gratefulness by regularly writing in a gratitude journal.
9. Incense or Candles
Not only do incense smell amazing, but they also make me feel at ease. If you want to try some out, I recommend the HEM brand in the scents Dragons Blood, Lavender, and Frankincense-Myrrh.
I’m always burning incense. If you were to visit my house right now, you’d smell the burn of incense lingering in the air.
Maybe you can try candles if incense isn’t your thing. They also smell great and have a relaxing effect.
10. Sage
Burning sage is perfect for clearing out negative energy. I like to burn throughout my entire house and then sit it on a sea shell and let it burn some more.
11. Crystals
Add crystals that you feel will help you shift the energy around things in your life. My favorite crystals are Moonstone, Smoky Quartz, and Gold Tiger’s Eye.
Items for Your Emotional Care
The items in your kit for your emotional wellness will provide comfort, relief, and fun.
Items for Comfort
12. Delicious Desserts
Nothing says self care like indulging in your favorite treats. So don’t forget to include your favorite snacks. I love dark chocolate candy, fudge brownies, and honey buns (I might go grab one now!)
13. Herbal Tea
Will you have tea with me? Tea not only tastes great, but it also has some healing properties. One of my favorite teas is Earl Grey. I’ll add a splash of heavy cream, some sugar-free vanilla syrup, and YUM!
14. Heating Pad
Don’t underestimate what a heating pad can do for you. It provides so much relief for soreness, achiness, and cramps.
15. Plush Blanket
Stick a plush blanket in your kit. It’s perfect for snuggling while you’re reading your favorite book
Items for Fun
16. Yarn and a Needle
Have you ever tried crocheting? You can make everything from socks, little hats, to blankets. My very first creation was a huge pink blanket that I made back in high school.
17. Plastic Lacing Glimp
So this is taking it waaaay back to my childhood. Do you remember the little plastic string that came in an assortment of colors and we would make bracelets and pieces to go on keychains?
If I remember correctly, we called it “string”. Anyway, this is guaranteed fun!
Items for Your Physical Care
Your physical self care items are things that are going to keep you clean, refreshed, and looking your absolute best.
18. Vitamin C Serum
Instantly brighten and plumpen your skin with some Vitamin C serum or oil. I like to use the Cleen Beauty Vitamin C Papaya Glow Serum.
19. Perfume
Add your favorite perfume to your self care kit. Spritz a little bit on your skin for an instant boost in your mood.
20. Face Mask
Aren’t facials like the best beauty treatments ever? Applying a face mask can make you instantly feel relaxed and refreshed.
21. Exfoliating Gloves
Include a pair of exfoliating gloves to keep your whole body free of dead skin.
22. Lip Balm
Keep your lips soft and supple with some lip balm. My favorite brands of lip balm are Soft Lips and NIVEA Moisture Lip Care.
23. Press-On Nails
Skip the nail polish, and add press-on nails in your kit instead. Press-on nails are versatile and easy to use.
