Practical Ways To Feel Comfortable in Your Own Skin
How to Love the Skin You’re In
If you’re struggling to feel comfortable in your own skin, don’t fret. I promise you’re not the only one. We’ve all felt uncomfortable in our own skin at some point because we’ve spent way too much time focusing on our flaws and feeling inferior.
But what does it mean to feel comfortable in your own skin? Put simply, being comfortable in your own skin means self-acceptance. It’s accepting everything about who you are and being okay with it 100%.

Create a Powerful Morning Routine
Believe it or not, the way you start your day has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself. It sets the tone for your whole day. Think back to the last time you woke up late, skipped breakfast, and had to rush out of the house.
Did you feel good about yourself? Did you feel sure of yourself throughout the day? Probably not.
Before having a morning routine, I was the very definition of the person I just described above. I spent my days feeling hungry, irritable, and upset with myself for being unprepared.
So, let’s not underestimate what effects a good morning routine can have on loving the skin you’re in. Here is a really simple morning routine to start your day.
- Wake up early to ensure that your day runs smoothly
- Set aside 10 minutes of quiet time. You can simply sit in peace, or do some journaling
- Do some yoga to release tension and feelings of stress
- Turn on your favorite playlist and be wowed by the instant boost in your mood
- Make your favorite healthy breakfast
- Get dressed for the day, and put in the effort to look your absolute best
If you’re having trouble finding your morning groove, then maybe you need to prepare the night before. Here are some things I do at night to make sure my morning routine is on point:
- Go to bed at a decent time – no later than 10:30 PM
- Pick out the clothes I want to wear the next day
- Scope out the kitchen for some quick but yummy breakfast ideas
- Listen to some music to decide what kind of playlist I want to hear in the morning
Set and Achieve Daily Goals
By setting and achieving goals, you’re sending a direct boost to your confidence. You’re establishing trust within yourself about your capabilities and that gives you the courage to go after what you want in life. Daily, you should make a list of everything you want to accomplish.
You can make a mental list, but I prefer to write my list down on paper or in my phone. Writing out your list gives you an overview of the goals for the day, and you’ll be able to peek at them throughout the day just in case you forget what goals you’re working towards.
When I set my daily goals, I like to make sure it’s something I can realistically complete for the day. My goals change day-to-day, but here are some things that usually make it to the list:
- Vacuum my bedroom.
- Read for 30 minutes.
- Outline my next blog post.
Make your list as extravagant or as simple as you’d like. As you complete each goal, check it off your list and feel proud of yourself for getting things done.

Reinvent Yourself
If you’re truly unhappy with something about yourself and it can be changed (keywords: can be changed), then change it. Self-improvement is always encouraged! Don’t limit your improvement to your appearance, but focus on a complete transformation of your life – mentally, physically, and emotionally. Prioritize the things you want to change and get to work.
Ideas for a physical transformation:
- Follow a skincare regimen.
- Get enough sleep.
- Eat right.
Ideas for a mental transformation:
- Learn something new.
- Meditate.
Ideas for an emotional transformation
- Practice gratitude.
- Speak up for yourself.
Find the Source of Your Negative Thoughts
Your mindset matters, so get your mind right. Don’t allow yourself to wallow in a negative mindset or negative habits. Focus on the positive, but also try to understand where your negative mindset is coming from so that it can be addressed.
Sometimes you’re so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that you forget to take the time to reassess. If you can’t seem to shake negative thoughts, reevaluate some things in your life like:
- Relationships – are you in a toxic relationship/friendship
- Career – are you happy in your career
- Finances – are you struggling with debt
I’ve found that for me, the majority of my negative thoughts stem from feelings of stress.
Once you figure out what’s bothering you, find ways to resolve it to put your mind at ease.
Control and Shape Your Own Reality
To be completely comfortable with who you are, you have to be in control of your own reality and that equates to living life on your own terms. You have to wake up every day and make the choice to live for yourself. This means choosing and doing things despite the risk of disappointing other people.
Don’t people-please your way through life. If someone else’s opinion can shift you away from who you are and the things you care about, you are bound to lose your sense of self. And whose skin would you be in then? Yours or theirs?
I’m telling you that it is 100% okay to follow your dreams, to choose that career, to wear what you want, and to be who you are at your core. No matter how hard it may seem.

Focus on Things that Make You Feel Good
Doing things that make you feel good can also help you feel comfortable in your own skin. And isn’t practicing a little self-care known for putting you in a good mood? Take a few minutes every evening to carve out some time for yourself. Dedicate this time to self-care activities like running yourself a warm bath, lighting some candles, or relaxing away to a soft lullaby of music. If you have some extra time, you could create a full spa day in the comfort of your own home.
End Your Day with Self-Reflection
Take time at the end of every day to reflect on who you are, and show yourself a little compassion. Understand that despite your insecurities, you’re still worthy. Instead of focusing on where you fall short, think about all of the goals you’ve accomplished today. Commend yourself for putting in the effort to change your thoughts and control your reality.
