Spirituality: A Guide For Beginners
Spirituality can be defined in many different ways. If you perform a Google search or take a scroll on social media you’ll see several definitions and opinions – maybe even some people telling you that your spirituality is wrong.
But spirituality is unique to every individual. And it is your right to define and find your spirituality as you see fit. It is your own personal journey in which you connect to yourself and the Divine.
Don’t allow other people to tell you your spiritual path is right or wrong because it’s your path.
In this guide to spirituality for beginners, I’m going to cover how to start a spiritual journey and some basic tools and resources to get you started.

Why You Should Start a Spiritual Journey
Why on earth would anyone want to start a spiritual journey? Well, there are several reasons. Here are a few:
- You’re trying to figure out who you are
- You’re ready to live your life on your own terms
- Feeling like your life is out of control
- Needing more peace in your life
- You want to be happier
- You’re just interested in spirituality and want to learn more
It doesn’t matter the reason. You don’t even need a reason. If you want to start a spiritual journey just start one.
Struggling to follow a spiritual path that truly aligns with you? My Individual Spirituality Toolkit can help you shift your mindset and free yourself from external pressures. It’s a toolkit I designed based on my personal experiences and struggles with spirituality.
Here’s Why I Started My Journey
Growing up, and even now as an adult, I never followed a religion or chose to live my life by religious rules set by someone else. I was just me – a free thinker (and sometimes an overthinker 😊).
As I was going through college, I found myself very intrigued by religion. Not just one religion – but all of them! From Christianity to Hinduism to Islam. They were all interesting.
And in staying true to myself, I knew that I would never follow just one religion. It didn’t feel right to me.
So I left all those experiences in college.
But at the end of 2018, things in my life began to shift. I began to ask myself some of the questions we all eventually ask ourselves. Who am I? What is my purpose? Why am I here?
In early 2019, I found myself immersed in tons of research (and many sleepless nights) which eventually resulted in me starting my own spiritual journey.
How to Start a Spiritual Journey as a Beginner
1. Understand the Spiritual Journey is Yours
If you don’t take away anything else from this article, please take away this: YOUR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY IS YOURS.
No one can tell you what to do or what practices to follow. So, it’s definitely okay for you to ignore and block out other people’s opinions (including mine) as it relates to your path.
If you get to a point in your journey and you feel like smudging your house, do it! Maybe you want to try reading tarot cards or maybe you feel like praying.
Just do what you feel is right for you. The most important thing to remember is that you stay true and honest with yourself.
2. Research Different Spiritual Practices and Beliefs
I am a huge advocate of always doing your own research, no matter the subject. Research everything. Whether it be your spiritual beliefs, old beliefs you’ve been taught, or how to connect with your spiritual self.
Read books about different religions and spiritual practices. Watch educational videos or movies and talk to people to learn about their personal spiritual experiences.
Ask all the questions! You will always be researching and learning on your spiritual journey.
Your journey is meant to help you grow, and you grow with knowledge and information. So use your research, knowledge, and personal experience to form your own conclusions.
3. Meditate and Find Clarity
Learn how to meditate. The benefits of meditation are infinite. Start off with a few minutes a day and work your way up.
In fact, it’s super important to take the time to clear your mind. You’ll be able to ground yourself and hone in on your innermost thoughts.
My favorite meditation app is the Mindfulness App. You can find it in the Play Store. Also, I enjoy meditation videos from Michael Sealey on YouTube.
If you seek clarity and confidence in crafting your own spiritual path, the Individual Spirituality Toolkit is your complete guide to exploring spirituality on your terms. 4. Get into the Habit of Journaling
As you’re exploring spirituality, keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings. Write whatever comes to your mind. You’ll be using this journal as a tool of reflection, and it’ll help you to better understand yourself and your path.
Spiritual Journaling
Spiritual journaling is the perfect way to document your daily experiences and increase your spiritual awareness.
Here are my simple tips for starting a spiritual journal. Use your journal to write about goals, gifts, and practices that pertain to your spirituality.
Manifestation Journaling
A manifestation journal isn’t just a notebook of dreams and goals. I like to think of it as a tool that aids in the creation of a life you desire.

Moon Journaling
Moon Journaling is a great way to create lasting change in your life. Setting goals and intentions around each phase will allow you to break out your goals into obtainable chunks.
Here are some moon journaling prompts that focus on the major moon phases. All prompts come with a free printable download!
5. Practice What You Learn
Take the things that you have learned and implement them into your everyday life. Practice grounding yourself. Write a ritual. Connect with nature. Make moon water. Meditate. Pray.
